Rep. Williams: House - Senate Republican Proposal Would Provide Relief from High Energy Costs

Inaction on Energy Legislation Hurting CT Consumers

With the majority Democrats unable to agree on a comprehensive energy bill with less than three weeks left in the 2007 legislative session, the state legislature needs to move quickly to enact measures that enjoy bipartisan support and would provide residents some relief from high energy costs through conservation, energy efficiency, conservation and changes in the state’s energy policy, State Representative Sean Williams said today.

Several of those measures were presented by House and Senate Republican leaders at a news conference Friday, May 18th.. Representative Williams, R-68th District, the House Ranking Member (Republican Leader) on the General Assembly’s Energy & Technology Committee, was one of the leaders who discussed the issue at the news conference.

“Connecticut residents have been enduring skyrocketing energy costs for more than a year now and are demanding relief. Energy is not a partisan issue. There are legislators on both sides of the aisle who are committed to finding solutions to Connecticut’s energy problems. The proposals we have identified enjoy widespread support and we are offering them as a compromise package that responds to the concerns we have been hearing from our constituents for months,” Representative Williams said.

Representative Williams and his Republican colleagues have proposed several energy related tax breaks, as well as aggressive conservation and energy efficiency programs, among other things.  Representative Williams noted that the Republicans will attempt to amend any energy-related bills in order to force the legislature to have a vote on the issue before the General Assembly adjourns on June 6th.
