REP. SCRIBNER APPLAUDS STATE GRANT FOR BROOKFIELD SENIOR CENTER

Area Legislator Helps Secure Federal Funding For Local Project

Hartford—State Rep. David Scribner, R-Brookfield, today applauded the release of a $750,000 state grant for renovations to the Brookfield Senior Center. The funds were part of a $13.2 million allocation for 28 towns in Connecticut.

The grants allow the state to partner with smaller towns for construction projects involving senior centers, municipal buildings and housing for the elderly and low-and moderate income residents. They are federal small cities grant funding administered in Connecticut by the state Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD).

Brookfield’s $750,000 grant will be used toward the expansion of the senior center’s kitchen and  community room, and renovate the entrance and electrical system. In addition, the town will contribute $1 million in leveraged funds toward the project. Rep. Scribner, who worked with Brookfield officials and state agencies involved, including the DECD, the Office of Policy Management and the Governor's office to obtain this grant, also serves as Brookfield’s treasurer.

“This grant, combined with the funding the town will provide, will transform the Community Center facility that was built 25 years ago into a greatly enhanced Senior Center,” said Rep. Scribner. “It is good news that the state funds, which are the maximum amount of any grant provided in this allocation, are being released now.  It is an excellent example of state, federal, and local officials working together to benefit residents. We can look forward to seeing progress on the project in the coming months.”

In addition, Rep. Scribner also helped secure $434,000 in the state bond package in October 2007 to assist in completing the project.
