‘STEAP’ Funding Announced For Brookfield |

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that $500,000 in new state funding will soon be available to Brookfield for streetscape improvements in the Four Corners area. The funding comes from the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) that is to be approved at the next meeting of the State Bond Commission.
The funds will be used for additional capital improvements to downtown Brookfield. They will include improvements to sidewalks, signage and lighting. The funds will also provide for potable water to the area.
“This marks a major step forward in our progress toward creating an attractive village center right here in Brookfield,” Governor Rell said. “I want the center of Brookfield to be walkable, bikable, accessible and safe. From new sidewalks to attractive new signage to decorative lighting, these funds will provide Brookfield with a kickstart toward that goal.”
“Governor Rell has once again come through for Brookfield residents,” State Senator Andrew Roraback said. “This is great news for the future of the town. With these funds, we are literally helping to enhance the town’s character. This will boost community pride and attract visitors to the area.”
“Residents have indicated their support for the establishment of a village center, and this is a key step in that process,” said State Representative David Scribner. “I was pleased to work with Governor Rell on attaining these funds for Brookfield, and I look forward to making continued progress toward creating a focal point for the town that is business-friendly and pedestrian-friendly.”
In June, Governor Rell announced $500,000 to help Brookfield pay for a water line extension project along Federal Road. The project will extend the water line on Federal Road from Orchard Street south to the Danbury border. Altogether, the water line project is expected to cost $5 million, with $2 million raised to date for the Village Center north to the New Milford town line.
A total of $20 million has been authorized for more than 100 small towns under the STEAP program this fiscal year. The Bond Commission will meet October 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
