Scribner Applauds Senate Passage of Jobs Initiative

Brookfield Legislator Says Unanimous Vote Encouraging for Economy

HARTFORD – Representative David Scribner (R-Brookfield) today noted that the passage of a critical jobs bill in the state Senate last Friday finally moved the Connecticut General Assembly in the right direction toward improving Connecticut’s stagnating economy.

The bill, SB 702, An Act Concerning Jobs for the 21st Century, passed the state Senate unanimously Friday night.

“The bill doesn’t have everything that is needed, but it certainly has important ingredients for making a healthier economy for the state,” said Scribner.  “An exemption from the local property tax manufacturing equipment, some important tax credits, as well as necessary incentives to business for development and innovation are important parts of this bill, and set an excellent framework toward turning the state around.”

Scribner noted that Connecticut continues to lag behind most of the nation in terms of economic growth, and attributes a good portion to that stagnation to anti-business taxes and regulations and mandates that Connecticut has piled on over the years.

“The Connecticut General Assembly has done a good job in creating an atmosphere that has stifled the economy and produced anemic job growth,” said Scribner.  “It’s about time we began to lift many of the road blocks that have been placed there through bad policy.  This is a good start.”

The bill now heads to the House for action there.  Governor M. Jodi Rell has already indicated that if the measure reaches her desk, she will sign it.
