Gov. Rell, Rep. Piscopo: $200,400 Grant Approved for Sidewalk Replacement Project in Thomaston

The State Bond Commission today approved a $200,040 grant to help pay for the replacement of sidewalks along several streets in Thomaston, Governor M. Jodi Rell and state Representative John E. Piscopo, R-76th District, announced today.

The Bond Commission approved the grant, which is provided through the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP), at its monthly meeting today.

“This grant will help the Town of Thomaston replace deteriorating sidewalks on Gilbert, Grand, Oak, South Main, Union and Walnut Streets and Hillside Avenue,” Governor Rell said.  “The project will not only improve pedestrian safety but will promote economic development through greater public access and enhanced appearance along these roadways.”

“Although the town has made an effort over the past few years to repair and replace its deteriorated sidewalks, we have been limited in what we could do because of budget constraints,” said Representative Piscopo, who has worked to obtain funding for the project for the past few months. “This grant will enable us to proceed with a comprehensive sidewalk improvement project that will address the problem on a town-wide basis. Once completed, this project will make Thomaston safer for pedestrians for years to come. I’d like to thank Governor Rell for supporting our efforts to correct a serious safety problem in town.”

The sidewalks were deemed most critically in need of replacement due to the frequency of their use, deteriorating condition and their lack of accessibility for people with disabilities.
