Rep.  Perillo & Sen. Debicella Hail State Funds For Brownfield Remediation In Shelton

Senator Dan Debicella (R-21) and Representative Jason Perillo (R-113) today applauded the awarding of $425,000 in state funding to help remediate the former Axton Cross site in Shelton.

“This is a tremendous boost to ongoing efforts to redevelop downtown, and I want to thank Governor Rell for her support of the city’s efforts to restore vibrancy to the community,” said Senator Debicella.

“This is terrific news for the city, and for everyone in government and the private sector who continue to work so hard to revitalize downtown. We are grateful for Governor Rell’s continued support for our efforts,” said Representative Perillo.

Earlier this week, Governor M. Jodi Rell announced that Shelton is one of five communities across the state to be awarded grants under the Brownfield Municipal Pilot Program funded through the State Bond Commission. Under the pilot program, the state Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) designates five projects in communities where brownfields are hindering economic development.

The funding awarded to Shelton will go toward the remediation of a one-acre site adjacent to the Housatonic River that was the location of chemical manufacturer Axton Cross.

This site is to be offered for private sale and redevelopment, and is a key component of the downtown redevelopment project known as Enterprise and Commerce Park.
