REP. O’NEILL: TRAINING SCHOOL TO RECEIVE $255,000 FOR UPGRADES

HARTFORD – State Rep. Arthur J. O’Neill, R-Southbury, today announced the state Bond Commission has approved $255,000 in upgrades for Southbury Training School. The commission made the award during its monthly meeting in Hartford this morning.

From the allocation approved today, $200,000 will be used for fire alarm replacement in 10 buildings on the campus. The remaining $55,000 will be used for window replacement at a residential housing building.

“Today’s award shows the state’s long-term commitment to continuing Southbury Training School as an important part of the Southbury community,” said Rep. O’Neill.

Southbury Training School was built in the late 1930s to house individuals with developmental disabilities. More than 500 people reside on the rural campus, which is comprised of 125 buildings.  The school independently operates its own power, heat, sewage treatment and water plants. It has a separate Southbury Training School Fire and Ambulance department as well as a Connecticut State Police Resident Trooper. An extensive array of services such as building maintenance, transportation and its own Health Care unit help to provide the needed services to the residents.

The state run residential facility employs over 1,500 full time, part time and consulting staff. The staff provides supports and services in a broad array of areas including: medical, vocational, residential, and therapeutic and facility support services.
