‘STEAP’ Funding For Washington Road Project Announced |

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that $390,000 in new state funding will soon be available to underwrite the cost of improvements on Mygatt and Scofield Hill roads in the town of Washington. The funding comes from the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) that is to be approved at the next meeting of the State Bond Commission.
The project includes the paving of 3,400 feet of Mygatt Road as well as sightline improvements at the intersection of Mygatt and Scofield Hill roads.
“I have made a commitment to our small towns to help reduce the burden on local taxpayers whenever feasible,” Governor Rell said. “This project is a good example of how the state can join hands with a small town for the benefit of local residents. In this case, the town will be able to eliminate a drainage problem that has become especially hazardous in the winter months. It has become a public safety issue that needs our attention now.”
Governor Rell singled out state Senator Andrew Roraback and Representative Arthur O’Neill, who represent Washington in the General Assembly, for bringing this project to the forefront and helping to secure the necessary funding.
“The residents of Washington have lived with this hazard long enough and they need a hand from the state,” Senator Roraback said. “I thank Governor Rell for helping us keep this project on track.”
“Simply stated, these improvements will make this section of Washington safer for all residents and commuters,” said Representative O’Neill. “It is also a good example of a small town partnering with the state for the benefit of the community. On behalf of the citizens of Washington, I would like to thank Governor Rell for moving this project forward.”
A total of $20 million has been authorized for more than 100 small towns under the STEAP program this fiscal year. The Bond Commission will meet Friday, October 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
