Kalinowski: Charles W. Wimler Highway to be Dedicated in Ceremony |

DURHAM – When residents of Durham think of public service, they are likely to think immediately of Charles W. Wimler. His name was synonymous with community service, defined by a lifetime of commitment to Durham including 22 years as its First Selectman (1949-1971), and 65 years with the Durham Grange #57. Wimler passed away at the age of 89 last January leaving an unforgettable legacy of preservation which will continue to distinguish Durham, and establish its rural character for generations to come.
Representative Ray Kalinowski (R-100) has worked with local and state officials to see that a portion of Route 77, Guilford Road in Durham is renamed “The Charles W. Wimler Scenic Highway” in a small tribute to the great works and sacrifice of Mr. Wimler. Kalinowski successfully introduced legislation during this past session of the General Assembly renaming the portion of roadway.
“This stretch of highway passes through some of the most beautiful places in Durham,” said Kalinowski. “These are the very places that his hard work has preserved for us and for future generations. I think it is very fitting that those driving along this stretch of road should be able to see the legacy he has left from a highway named in honor of him.”
The dedication ceremony will be conducted on Tuesday, August 21st at the Wimler Farm at 601 Guilford Road at 1:30 pm.
