Kalinowski Obtains Relief for Lake Beseck

Legislature Approves Measure to Protect Property from Winter Ice Damage

State Rep. Raymond C. Kalinowski, R-100th, Middletown, Middlefield, Durham, has successfully passed legislation to address a long-standing problem with winter ice damage to Lake Beseck property in Middlefield.

The state House of Representatives and the state Senate have approved a proposal introduced by Rep. Kalinowski to lower Lake Beseck water levels temporarily in order to lessen winter damage to property along the lake front.

“Due to fluctuating ice levels, many people have suffered serious damage to their docks, ramps, stairs and retaining walls,” said Rep. Kalinowski. “Although the problem has been brought to the attention of the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), their inaction and lack of cooperation led me to propose this legislative remedy.”

The bill requires a three-foot draw down in lake levels during even numbered years and a six foot draw down during odd numbered years, said Rep. Kalinowski.

The bill requires an agreement to be drawn up among the DEP, the town of Middlefield and the Lake Beseck Association by November 1, 2006.

The state House of Representatives adopted the Kalinowski proposal April 28 and the Senate concurred on May 2. The measure now goes to Gov. M. Jodi Rell to sign the measure into law. The proposal was approved as an amendment to House Bill 5747.

Rep. Kalinowski serves the 100th Assembly District of Middletown, Middlefield and Durham in the state House of Representatives.
