REP. HOVEY PRESENTS REMARKS, CITATION TO STATE MILITIA
Second Company Horse Guard Honored During October 4 Ceremony

NEW HAVEN – On Saturday, October 4, State Rep. DebraLee Hovey (R-Monroe, Newtown) gave remarks and an official citation on behalf of Governor M. Jodi Rell for the 200th Anniversary of the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, which took place on the New Haven Green. The ceremony featured a review of the entire state militia, including the First Company Governor’s Horse Guard, based in Avon, and First and Second Company Foot Guards.

According to the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, the unit, now based in Newtown, was founded in 1808 after Elihu Munson and a number of gentlemen of New Haven petitioned the General Assembly to form a troop of cavalry to function as Governor’s horse guards. The duties of the original company were “to attend upon and escort him [the Governor] in times of peace and war.”

The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard is part of the organized militia of the State of Connecticut, under the direction of the Governor, and the National Guard.  Although today’s Trooper most often rides in ceremonial functions, cavalry military training of horse and rider takes place throughout the year.  The public is always welcome to visit during regular drill hours or events.

“It was an honor to be asked to present the remarks from the Governor at this event,” said Rep. Hovey. “Our state’s militia units conduct themselves with the utmost pride and then to see the Second Company Horse Guard formally presented on Saturday was incredibly impressive. That the unit has done so well representing our state for 200 years is something to be truly proud of and as a longtime equestrian, I’ve always been thrilled they maintain their facility in Newtown.”
