LEGISLATION TO ALLOW FOR NEW MONROE NURSING HOME CLEARS FINAL LEGISLATIVE HURDLE

On Tuesday, May 6, the State House of Representatives gave final legislative approval to a bill co-sponsored by State Rep. DebraLee Hovey, R-Monroe, that will allow the Jewish Home For The Elderly to open a facility in Monroe. Senate Bill 559 now moves to Governor M. Jodi Rell for final approval.

Provisions in SB 559 remove a limitation on a company’s ability to establish a second facility within a certain distance of an existing facility it operates. The Jewish Home For The Elderly operates a facility in nearby Fairfield. The organization’s mission is to provide to seniors the healthcare, housing and community-based rehabilitation services required to achieve the highest quality of life attainable.

The Jewish Home is a non-profit facility governed by a highly dedicated Board of Directors from surrounding communities. Its medical staff is one of the few nursing homes in the State to be approved by the Connecticut State Medical Society to grant physicians continuing education credits.

“This legislation will allow a multi million business to come to Monroe that will have minimal impact on town services,” said Rep. Hovey.  “It will bring jobs to town and in light of the loss of some businesses in Monroe, it will bring about a much-needed increase to our grand list. I’m thankful to Representative Gibbons of the Human Services  Committee and Senator McKinney for advocating so strongly for this legislation.”
