NEW CANAAN – State Representative John Hetherington, R- 125th District, today announced that New Canaan resident Dr. Mark DeWaele has been appointed to the Advisory Committee to the Office of Healthcare Advocate by State House Republican Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R-Norwalk.

The mission of the Office of the Healthcare Advocate (OHA) is to assist consumers with health care issues related to consumer rights and responsibilities as members of managed care plans. This effort includes direct consumer advocacy and education, interagency coordination of benefits, and a voice in the legislative process. OHA also strives to ensure that the products and services available are adequate.

Dr. DeWaele practices dentistry in New Canaan and has a long history of community involvement. Currently, he serves on the Town Council and formerly was chairman of the Park and Recreation Commission. He also has served as president of the Connecticut State Dental Society, New Canaan Chapter.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Amherst College and his Dental degree from Tufts School of Dental Medicine both schools in Massachusetts.

“I am delighted by Mark’s appointment and his willingness to undertake this public service,” commented State Representative Hetherington who recommended Dr. DeWaele for the appointment. “As a distinguished health care professional with a sound record of public service, he is unusually well qualified to make a valuable contribution in an area that will become even more critical as we address how to expand access to health care.”

Dr. DeWaele lives in New Canaan with his wife Heidi and his three children.
