REP. HARKINS: INFORMATION AVAILABLE REGARDING MEDICARE PART D |

Hartford — State Representative John Harkins, R-Stratford, announced today that residents in Stratford who would like information regarding the federal Medicare Part D program are welcome to contact his office for a helpful pamphlet of information.
Medicare’s Part D prescription drug coverage is insurance that covers both brand-name and generic prescription drugs at participating pharmacies. Everyone with Medicare is eligible for this coverage and must choose a prescription drug plan, regardless of income and resources, health status, or current prescription expenses. The pamphlet, created by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, offers key information for seniors to consider when choosing a drug plan.
The Federal Government has set a deadline of May 15 for enrollment in the program. However, Connecticut state law passed in 2005 allows the Commissioner of Social Services to designate a program for anyone who “does not select a Medicare Part D plan within a reasonable period of time.”
“Medicare Part D is a federal program but since last fall, state and local officials have continuously received calls from seniors with questions,” said Rep. Harkins. “It is in the best interest of seniors to learn as much as possible about the program before enrolling so that they can choose an option that provides the best coverage for their needs.”
