Reps Hamzy, Burns Urge Bristol, Plymouth Residents to Nominate Local Vets for CT Veterans Hall of Fame |

Nominations for Vets with Outstanding post-Military Achievements Due June 30th
State Representatives William A. Hamzy and Ron Burns today urged Bristol and Plymouth residents to nominate local veterans with distinguished records of public service to their communities to the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame, Class of 2008.
The deadline for submitting nominations is June 30, 2008, the legislators said
Governor M. Jodi Rell created the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame in 2005 through Executive Order No. 5 to recognize the post-military achievements of outstanding veterans from the state, living or deceased, and to spotlight their contributions to others through their efforts on behalf of education, public safety, volunteer service, elected office, youth activities and other areas of public service.
“Many Bristol and Plymouth veterans who fought for our country have continued to serve by devoting countless hours of service to our towns,” said Representative Hamzy, R-78th District. “They volunteer as coaches for youth sports leagues, serve on local boards and commissions, and are active in church and civic organizations. If you know a veteran who has an outstanding record of service to our towns, I strongly urge you to submit his or her name to the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs before June 30th.”
“Bristol is home to thousands of veterans with distinguished service records who care about our city, our schools and our young people,” said Representative Burns, R-77th District. “Their volunteer activities have made our city a better place to live, work and raise our families. Although they do not seek the limelight for their efforts, they still deserve to be recognized. If any of your friends, neighbors or relatives are veterans who have served our city well, please consider nominating them for induction into the Connecticut Veterans’ Hall of Fame. It is a fitting tribute to their contributions to Bristol.”
Veterans who served in all military conflicts are eligible for nomination, including World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan and Iraq.
Ten Connecticut veterans are inducted each year based on recommendations from an executive committee and final selection by the Governor.
The Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame is not a military Hall of Fame. Veterans selected for induction must have honorably served their country in the U.S. Armed Forces and continued to serve their fellow man by their deeds and accomplishments throughout their lives. Posthumous nominations for deceased veterans also are welcome.
Among the requirements to be eligible for the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame, the nominee must have been born in Connecticut or resided here for at least five years; the nominee must meet the definition of a “veteran” under the Connecticut General Statutes 27-103; and the nominee must have received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces.
Nomination packets must not exceed five 8˝-by-11 pages and must be received by June 30, 2008 at the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs, 287 West Street, Rocky Hill, Connecticut 06067. Nominations received after June 30th will be considered for the following year’s class.
Please visit www.ct.gov/ctva for more information and to obtain nominating packets.
Nomination packets also are available by calling the Connecticut Department of Veterans’ Affairs at (860) 721-5818.
