Home Energy Audits Available

Shoreline residents can sign up for home energy audits under a conservation program offered through the state Energy Efficiency Fund. With an energy audit, according to State Rep. Marilyn Giuliano, R-Old Saybrook, constituents can learn how to cut their home energy use through conservation measures.

Connecticut residents who are customers of Connecticut Light and Power, United Illuminating, Connecticut Natural Gas, or Yankee Gas can find out how to reduce their energy use with an energy audit of their homes done by the Energy Solutions Program.

A two-person team will plug holes and gaps, weather strip, replace incandescent light bulbs, install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators, and otherwise show how homeowners can make their homes more energy efficient. By calling 1-877-WISE-USE (947-3873) or logging on to www.ctenergyinfo.com, people can schedule this audit of their homes.  There is currently a month-long waiting list for an audit.

Under the terms of the program, the audit is free to customers of the major Connecticut electric and gas companies. But there is a $300 fee for people who heat their homes with oil. Customers fund the program through a 0.211 cent-per-kilowatt-hour surcharge on their monthly electric bills.

Low Income Weatherization Program

Many seniors or low-income families may also be eligible for the Weatherization Residential Assistance Partnership (WRAP). It provides free weatherization services and improvements to peoples’ homes to help them save on energy costs.  For more information or to obtain an application, call 1-800-388-9727.

Proposed Home Energy Credit

Connecticut House Republicans propose income tax credits of up to $500 per household for joint filers to help cover home heating costs. This credit would be taken when people file their income tax returns each year. It is part of the Connecticut Republicans’ Lending a Helping Hand plan to deal with tough economic times.

Rep. Marilyn Giuliano serves the 23rd Assembly District of Old Lyme, Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook in the state House of Representatives.
