Governor Rell with Reps. Gibbons and Floren Announce Funds for Bruce Museum in Greenwich |

Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that $750,000 for the Bruce Museum in Greenwich is expected to be approved at the August 4 meeting of the State Bond Commission.
“The Bruce Museum promotes the understanding and appreciation of art and science to enrich the lives of all people,” Governor Rell said. “These funds will help the Bruce Museum maintain and expand the artistic, cultural and historical programs it has provided to the people of Greenwich and other Fairfield County communities for so many years.”
State Rep. Lile Gibbons said, “Obtaining bonding funds from the state jump starts the Bruce Museum's capital campaign as it moves forward with its ambitious, but necessary, renovation and expansion project. The museum is one of the jewels of Greenwich not only for its exhibits but also as a destination for out-of town visitors, school children and art scholars. We are delighted the State is helping fund our new facility.”
“The Bruce Museum is a local community treasure and a regional destination tourist attraction. We are grateful for the financial support of the Governor as our public-private partnership works to expand and enhance the Museum's educational and gallery capabilities,” added State Rep. Livvy Floren.
The Museum was originally built as a private home in 1853. Robert Moffat Bruce, a wealthy textile merchant and member of the New York Cotton Exchange, bought the house and property in 1858.
In 1908, Robert Bruce bequeathed his home to the Town of Greenwich and stipulated that it be used "as a Natural History, Historical and Art Museum, for the use and benefit of the public."
