Rep. DelGobbo Announces Approval of $300,000 Grant for Naugatuck YMCA

State Rep. Kevin M. DelGobbo, R-70th, Naugatuck, said the state Bond Commission has approved $300,000 for improvements to the Naugatuck YMCA’s facility on Church Street.

I’m extremely grateful to the Governor for her support of this project. The Naugatuck YMCA is one of the most vital assets in our community,” said Representative DelGobbo, who has been serving as co-chair of the local initiative to renovate the Naugatuck YMCA and is a member of its Board of Directors.

DelGobbo noted that earlier this year the Naugatuck YMCA had launched a capital campaign that hopes to raise between $2.4 million and $2.9 million. The project will include substantial renovations to the entire building and will significantly enhance the program space and offerings that the YMCA will be able to provide to the community.

Governor M. Jodi Rell said the state will provide $300,000 for code compliance and facility improvements at the YMCA in Naugatuck. The funding was approved as scheduled at the State Bond Commission meeting on June 9.

“As in so many towns across our state, the YMCA in Naugatuck is a vital and vibrant part of the community – one that serves thousands of children and family members every year,” Governor Rell said. “Our communities count on the partnership they enjoy with the state to assist with projects like this, and I am pleased that we can make this funding available.”

Among the renovations and improvements to the YMCA building will be a three-stop elevator to improve public access to the facility. Other code renovations will also be made in the Church Street building. This is the second infusion of state funding at the Naugatuck “Y” this year. Earlier this spring, they received approval for $600,000 for other renovations to improve public and handicapped access to the facility.

Governor Rell thanked state Representative Kevin DelGobbo and state Senator Joan Hartley, whose districts include Naugatuck, for their assistance in moving this project forward.

The Naugatuck YMCA has been an anchor for providing vital community based services for children, adolescents, seniors and the community for over 100 years,” said state Senator Joan Hartley.  “This grant, which we are ever grateful for, will provide for the much needed update and renovation of this core facility.”

DelGobbo noted that the entire Naugatuck legislative delegation worked together in this initiative.
