Governor Rell Announces $600,000 for Naugatuck YMCA |

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that the state has awarded the town of Naugatuck a $600,000 grant to improve the overall accessibility of the town’s YMCA building.
The funding will be used to make the building compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Improvements will include the installation of a new elevator, creation/renovation of bathroom facilities to comply with ADA requirements, and upgrades to the locker rooms, fitness rooms, recreation rooms, and meeting rooms to comply with ADA requirements.
“We want to make certain that everyone can gain access to the building,” Governor Rell said. “This YMCA buzzes with activity, serving more than 10,000 people every year. These improvements will allow even more people to enjoy the Y and the services it provides.”
“The Naugatuck legislative delegation is extremely grateful to Governor Rell for her favorable consideration of this request,” State Representative Kevin DelGobbo said. “The Naugatuck YMCA is part of the heart and soul of our community. These improvements will have a dramatic impact on this vital asset.”
The total project cost is estimated at $2.3 million. The YMCA has already retained an architectural firm to plan the renovations and meet the needs identified in the long-range planning process.
The YMCA, located at 284 Church Street, has been in operation since 1895.
The federally funded Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program provides grants to eligible municipalities for economic development, affordable housing, community facilities and services, and revitalization or development projects. The funds are supplied by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD).
