‘STEAP’ Funding For Improvements to Middlebury Town Park Announced |

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that $488,000 in new state funding will soon be available to Middlebury for improvements to the Mary I. Johnson Park located on Maple Drive. The funding comes from the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) that is to be approved at the next meeting of the State Bond Commission.
The funds will pay for site preparation of four athletic fields in the park, including drainage, site restoration with topsoil and grass seed, irrigation system, and the completion of a paved parking area. “This park is about to undergo some major renovations,” said Governor Rell. “Four new athletic fields will significantly increase the availability of recreational opportunities for families and ensure greater participation in outdoor sports activities. This project will enhance the quality of life for Middlebury’s growing community.”
The new recreation areas at the park will include a baseball/softball field and three multi-use playing fields to be used primarily for soccer. Paved parking for 53 cars will also be included as part of the upgrades.
“The addition of four new athletic fields brings added benefits to our town,” said State Senator Louis DeLuca. “Five years ago Middlebury began the design of the Mary I. Johnson Park with the idea of future expansion to meet the growing needs of the community. We are extremely pleased that Governor Rell recognizes the value of our recreational treasure.”
“The vision Governor Rell has shown in bringing new services to our small towns is very much appreciated,” said State Representative Anthony D’Amelio. “This funding will help to ensure that this community park continues to serve the residents for years to come.”
A total of $20 million has been authorized for more than 100 small towns under the STEAP program this fiscal year. The Bond Commission will meet October 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
