REP. CARSON: VETERANS MEDAL APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE

HARTFORD - State Rep. Mary Ann Carson (R-New Fairfield) today expressed thanks to Veterans for their service in the United States Armed Forces and is conducting an outreach effort to make people aware that the State of Connecticut now offers a Connecticut War Times Service Medal.

“Veterans have made tremendous sacrifices to protect our freedom and I’m pleased the state offers this honor to recognize their efforts,” said Rep. Carson.

Rep. Carson has mailed letters throughout the 108th District to identified Veterans informing them of the medal.  However, many may not have registered in their respective towns as Veterans and she is hopeful they will take a moment to learn about the award.

To be eligible for the honor, a veteran must have served in time of war, as defined in state  statues, and who either was a resident of Connecticut at the time he or she was called to active duty for such service, or is domiciled in this state on the date of such award.

Rep. Carson’s letters to Veterans contained an application that if completed and returned to her office, will be forwarded to the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs for approval. The application is also available by calling her office at (800) 842-1423.  Applicants may also secure the application at the Office of the First Selectman in all three towns (New Fairfield, Sherman and Kent).  Rep. Carson indicated her appreciation to First Selectman John Hodge in New Fairfield, First Selectman Andrea O’Connor in Sherman and First Selectman Ruth Epstein in Kent for their assistance.

The application is also available by contacting the state Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-800-550-0000, or on the Internet at www.ct.gov/ctva

Veterans from Kent, New Fairfield and Sherman, who submit a completed application by April 10, 2008, and are approved by the CT Department of Veterans Affairs, will be invited to a ceremony to be held on May 31, 2008 at the New Fairfield High School at which time these medals will be presented.  A formal invitation will be mailed to all veterans eligible to receive the medal on that day.  Medals will be mailed to Veterans who have submitted an approved application but do not wish to attend the May 31st celebration.

Rep. Carson added that a separate ceremony recognizing Veterans from the Town of New Milford (also part of the 108th District) who receive this honor will take place at a later date.
