REP. CAFERO NAMED ‘CHAMPION LAWMAKER’ BY SERVICE PROVIDERS

Statewide Association Cites Help for Those in Need

HARTFORD – For his leadership in protecting at-risk private providers who care for more than 500,000 needy and disabled, House Republican Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr. has been named a “Champion Lawmaker’’ by the Connecticut Community Providers Association at the organization’s annual meeting.

Cafero, the Norwalk Republican, was cited for his efforts to block attempts to cut off funding for the service agencies through a contracting bill that would have prevented government’s ability to contract with private entities. The legislation was vetoed three times in the last years and Democrats, because of Republican opposition, were unable to override.

“Government some times is not as proficient at providing services to those who may need it most. It makes sense to hire those people who can do a better job of caring for those who may be homeless, helpless or at times hopeless,’’ Cafero said.

CCPA said of Cafero, “His strong voice has been a reminder that individuals with disabilities and significant needs have a right to be served in communities across Connecticut..’’ CCPA members tend those with disabilities or are in financial difficulty.

Cafero said of the numerous agencies and non-profits on hand, “You truly do God’s work. I look forward to working with you this year to so that the needs of the half million people you serve are met.’’

The so-called contracting bill would have limited government’s ability to contract with non-governmental agencies and would have driven up the costs of those services. Critics said the legislation was a blatant attempt create more public sector union jobs and was a gift to those unions.

Cafero said he expects Democrats will again attempt to get the bill through this year.

“We will work hard to prevent that,’’ Cafero said.
