Shelton Legislators: Bond Commission Okays Funding for Water Treatment Plant |

The State Bond Commission today approved funding in the amount of $20,483,840 that will help pay for costs associated with an expansion and upgrade project at Shelton’s wastewater pollution control facility, the city’s legislative delegation announced today.
“The expansion and upgrades to the wastewater treatment facility that this funding will make possible will increase the plant’s capacity and reduce the amount of nitrogen that flows into Long Island Sound. The improvements also will reduce the amount of untreated wastewater that is discharged from the facility into the Housatonic River after heavy rainstorms. As a member of the Bond Commission, I was pleased to support the funding for this long-awaited project,” said state Representative Richard O. Belden, R-113th District.
“The City of Shelton has experienced phenomenal growth over the past few years, especially in the Huntington and downtown areas, which has increased the wastewater flow to the plant. The improvements this funding will make possible will provide the expanded capacity the plant needs to meet the heavier demand. The upgrades also will help improve water quality in the Housatonic River and contribute to the restoration of Long Island Sound,” said state Representative Lawrence G. Miller, R-122nd District.
"This is terrific news for Shelton. I want to thank Governor Rell for supporting this important local project," said state Senator George L. "Doc" Gunther, R-21st District.
The funding includes grants totaling $4,995,301 and a low-interest loan in the amount of $15,488,539.
The funding will help pay for the design and construction of the upgrade and expansion project; an upgrade and a hydraulic expansion of four pump stations; and sewer collection system rehabilitation work. The project will provide nitrogen removal in accordance with nitrogen reduction goals.
