Gov. Rell, Rep. Bacchiochi: $64,211 STEAP Grant Okayed to Enhance Union Recycling Program

The State Bond Commission has approved a $64,211 grant that will pay for a metals recyclables building at the community transfer station in Union, Governor M. Jodi Rell and state Representative Penny Bacchiochi, R-52nd District, announced today.

The funding, which comes from the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP), was approved at today’s Bond Commission meeting.

“Recycling has become a way of life for all of us and this new facility can only enhance the efficiency of the Union refuse operation and its service to the community,” Governor Rell said. “The families and businesses of Union – our smallest town – will benefit from this new addition to the local transfer station, and I am pleased that this funding is now available. I have made a commitment to assisting our smaller municipalities and this grant will take some of the burden off the shoulders of local taxpayers.”

Governor Rell thanked state Senator Anthony Guglielmo and Representative Bacchiochi, both of whom represent Union in the legislature, for their leadership on the project.

“The new building at the transfer station will make it easier to segregate and process recyclable materials. It will help streamline the town’s recycling program and reduce operating costs,” Representative Bacchiochi said. “We have been working with Union since last year to secure this funding, and I’m very pleased that the Governor is making it happen.”

A total of $20 million has been authorized for more than 100 small towns under the STEAP program this fiscal year.
