The state Bond Commission today approved a $494,319 grant that will pay for the replacement of sidewalks along Main and East Main Street in Stafford, Governor M. Jodi Rell and state Representative Penny Bacchiochi, R- 52nd District, announced today.
The funding is provided through the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP). The funding was approved at today’s Bond Commission meeting.
“With this money, key portions of Stafford will get an upgrade that has been a long time coming,” Governor Rell said. “Sprucing up the town sidewalks and to making them more appealing and safe for pedestrians is not only good for residents, it is good for local businesses as well. Our main streets reflect the character of our towns. Stafford’s sidewalks are about to get a facelift, and that facelift will help spur the local economy in addition to improving the area’s quality of life.”
“This grant will fund an ambitious sidewalk replacement project that will significantly improve the overall appearance of the downtown area,” Representative Bacchiochi said. "I am excited about what this grant represents. Stafford is going through a renaissance- and these improvements are an important part of the town’s revitalization effort. By working together with the Selectman and the Governor we are shaping an economic future for Stafford that will benefit the town for generations to come."
Replacement of sidewalks will take place along both sides of Main Street and East Main Street (from Route 190 and Church Street) easterly to Route 190 and East Street. The project includes replacing curbs when necessary, re-setting existing curbing, removing concrete and asphalt and replacing it with colored stamped design asphalt.
