Alberts: $1.1 Million in State Grants Win Final OK

State Rep. Mike Alberts announced his district will receive $1,078,000 of the $20 million in Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grants approved today at the state Bond Commission meeting in Hartford.

Grants to Brooklyn were approved in the amount of $465,000, Hampton $350,000, Pomfret $233,000 and Woodstock $30,000, according to Rep. Alberts.

Rep. Alberts thanked Gov. M. Jodi Rell for approving the grants which he had advocated at the recommendation of local towns and community leaders.

“We are extremely fortunate that the governor and her administration recognized the needs of northeastern Connecticut and approved our requests for this state assistance,” said Rep. Alberts.

A summary of the grants follows:

$233,000 in new state funding will soon be available to help the Town of Pomfret improve access to the Airline State Park Trail and make improvements to its recreation park. Of this, a $140,000 grant will be used to acquire two acres of land for a trailhead entrance to Airline State Park Trail. A $93,000 grant will fund improvements and amenities at the recreation park on Route 97.

$465,000 in new state funding will soon be available to Brooklyn to make road and storm water run-off improvements on Day Street.

$350,000 in new state funding will soon be available to Hampton to renovate Grange Hall for a community center, and to make upgrades and improvements to the town’s Transfer Station. Renovations to the 100-year-old Grange Hall will include making safety improvements and ensuring the building meets public code compliance guidelines. A total of $299,000 has been designated for Grange Hall renovations and $51,000 for the transfer station upgrades.

$30,000 in new state funding will soon be available to purchase a solid waste compactor for the transfer station in Woodstock.

A total of $20 million has been authorized for more than 100 small towns under the STEAP program this fiscal year. The Bond Commission met Friday, October 6 in the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
