Governor Rell Announces ‘STEAP’ Funding For Woodstock Transfer Station Enhancement

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that $30,000 in new state funding will soon be available to purchase a solid waste compactor for the transfer station in Woodstock. The funding comes from the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) that is to be approved at the next meeting of the State Bond Commission.

“A grant like this will not only help the town of Woodstock address solid waste issues more efficiently, it will spare local taxpayers the need to produce the funding themselves,” Governor Rell said. “This new compactor will make a big difference for the community. In addition, the funding will cover the cost of linking the transfer station to a nearby well, providing immediately available water in the event of a fire or spill. This is a smart investment in the community.”

The Governor thanked Senator Tony Guglielmo and Representative Michael Alberts, both of whose districts include Woodstock, for their leadership on this project.

“Governor Rell’s commitment to our small towns is not lost on the people of Woodstock,” Senator Guglielmo said. “This project has important long-term benefits for our community, and I am grateful to the Governor for authorizing this funding.”

“Our local citizens recognize that this grant represents money for a critical project that would otherwise have to be raised through local taxes,” Representative Alberts said. “As a former selectman, I join the community in expressing our appreciation to Governor Rell.”

A total of $20 million has been authorized for more than 100 small towns under the STEAP program this fiscal year. The Bond Commission will meet Friday, October 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
